Maritime Class 66

The class 66 is the UK’s most populous diesel locomotive, used on almost every type of railfreight traffic in the UK. Class 66s are also infrequently seen on passenger railtour charters.

Where to see class 66?

You shouldn’t have too much difficulty finding a class 66 train in the UK, because they’re seen on nearly every railfreight working.

  • Freightliner class 66s are seen on intermodal container trains all over the country, on workings between Trafford Park, Southampton, Felixstowe, to name a few. Freightliner operate Mendip stone trains to aggregate yards around the South with flows from Merehead and Whatley Quarry to Acton and Westbury.
  • DRS class 66s are found on aggregate trains in the Crewe and Carlisle areas, as well as on intermodal container trains from Barking area to Daventry.
  • DB Cargo class 66s are seen on aggregate trains around the south that aren’t Mendip traffic. DB also run some intermodal trains.
  • Colas class 66s are usually found on engineers trains in the south.
  • GBRf have their fingers in several pies, with lots of intermodal trains out of Hams Hall and Southampton, various aggregate trains around the country too.

All of the above operators are too seen on engineering trains up and down the country. Class 66 locomotives are also seen on RHTT trains in places, during the autumn months.
