Below Post from 13th August 2019
The first Northern Trains class 142 was withdrawn from passenger service this week, with Northern pledging to remove them all from service before 2020.
The class 142, family name ‘Pacer’, is a type of rail bus, which were built between 1985 and 1987.
Pacer unit 142005 was the first to be withdrawn from Northern, along with 6 others, having clocked up over 3 million miles since 1987.
Do you know where the Pacers are being stored, and have any more been withdrawn in September or October?
The Class 142s are being stored at Heaton TMD in Newcastle.
Currently:
142009
142015
142016
142021
142022
142025
142037
142038
142050
142052
142064
142066
142088
142093
142096
Are in warm storage at Heaton TMD.
142046 has since entered back into service.
2 Class 142s have been withdrawn.
142005
142044 – Withdrawn due to a major fault.
Both 142005 & 142044 are stored at Newton Heath TMD awaiting disposal.
3 x Northern 142s parked south of Derby Station. 11/12
Side numbers
55789
55784
55792
Those 3 sent to Kingsbury on 10/12 were cancelled at Derby so that will be them, apparently some paperwork issues.
I have been to barrow hill today 21 12 19 and they told me that there were no class 142s stored there. What barrow do you mean? Barrow in furness?
Barrow in furness have about 4 of the class 142’s left in there siding
One car from 142029 is now at the Chasewater Railway.
The other car arrived today (23/12/19).
What about 142059 which is not in the list? Is that that got ride over a number of years ago on the WML? Any scrapping details?
142059 had an accident many years ago and was soon after scrapped. Back in 1991 I think
142008 was scrapped after crashing at Winsford in 1999.
being reported on railforums that 142033 is in use with south Wales police in bridgend but it’s unconfirmed as what exactly. they’re also reporting that 142050 has been scrapped, 142030 is to be preserved at the chasewater railway as well but down as unconfirmed and 142036 is to be preserved at the east kent railway, confirmed by the railway in a facebook post.
142016,022,025,037,050,064,088,096 have all been scrapped at EMR kingsbury
142059 was scrapped in 1991 after it crashed into the buffers at liverpool lime st.
142008 was scrapped in 1999 after a collision with a VT class 87 at Winsford.
Thankyou Murray, I have updated the post. Best Regards
I have been to barrow today and there were only 3 pacers there. Have the others been moved to somewhere else?
Yes 3 sounds right. It would appear you just missed the other 4, as they moved from Barrow to Heaton today. The ones left at Barrow should be 142028 142034 142046
What are they going to do with the stored pacers at gascoigne wood?
They’ll be gradually moved to Newport and Kingsbury for scrapping over the next few weeks or months. I guess if someone buys one then they might get moved by road to a preserved railway.
142082 is a Transport For Wales pacer, don’t think that’s stored yet.
Is it possible to see the pacers at gascoigne wood?
Doesn’t look like there’s any where to see them.
I’ve seen some pictures on Facebook, if you go and join the UK HST enthusiast group there is a picture of a 142 next to a LNER 43 in Gascoigne wood sidings but it doesn’t look like a very easy spot to get to , if it’s legal

You’d have to ask them how to get to it.
Excellent source of info. One small observation do the entries for 143612 and 143613 require reversing as I believe I saw 143612 recently.
Thanks for the info Matt I have been there today on the train and seen them. There didn’t seen to be any way you could take any pictures. Thanks
Do you know where 142 010 142 051 and 142 065 are at the moment.
I think 065 is at Heaton in warm storage, the rest I think are still in service.
142038 is set to be preserved (unknown owner)
143603 is set to be preserved at the Swindon and cricklade railway (reported it isn’t after being damaged although it is back in service now)
144003 is set to be preserved at the great central railway (Nottingham)
144011 is set to be preserved at the Keighly and worth valley railway
144017 is set to be preserved (unknown owner)
I hope that Midland Railway Butterley, Peak Rail, Ecclesbourne Valley Railway and many other Heritage Railways get a 142
142010 is a Cardiff one if that helps
Ladies & Gents
I can confirm the following
142001 NRM
142003 Perverse Owner withheld at present
142017 East Kent Railway
142019 Waverley Route Heritage Association
142020 Waverley Route Heritage Association
142027 Chasewater Railway
142029 Chasewater Railway
142030 Chasewater Railway
142033 South Wales Police (Training Aid)
142084 Rushden Historical Transport Society
142091 Rushden Historical Transport Society
Thought 036 was for EKR? or are they getting 2?
142027 is now at Chasewater but, as intended, is being stripped for spares.
Any February updates please ?
Hi David, the post has been updated to reflect 10/02/20 Wensleydale railway move. Kind Regards
142017 currently as of 3pm 19/02/20 is on a trailer at Toddington South services on the M1
Seen 142s 065 ,071 stood down in york station on 9/3/20
Just seen regarding the 2 143’s scrapped due to fire, when was this please, it must have been a few years ago?
web site say 17/10/04 but one side says 143615 the other says 143613 ???
Northern 142004, 142058, 142078, 142090 were the last four 142’s at Newton Heath, and were moved to Blackburn King Street Depot for warm storage on 6/7th April.
Just seen this morning (29 April 2020) 3 sets of South Wales pacers all coupled together travelling West of Cardiff (Ely) on the main under there own power. Does anyone know sadly, if they are off for scrapping perhaps at Bridgend or Swansea?
I could be wrong but there was a Landore to Cardiff and return VSTP working, it could have just been a stock move

144004 to be preserved at Aln Valley Railway
144017 to be preserved at AFRPS Scunthorpe
three unknown 144s for the following:
Airdale NHS Trust
Fagley Primary School
Huddersfield Platform 1 project
Class 144 let’s hope most are saved not scrapped. Do appreciate surviving ones will also require future parts.
WABCO has plenty so do the former depots.
been to worksop last week to see the new elextric 345s / 710s / 720s. didn’t see any 142, so 091 must have gone to its prese place.
142061 apparently off to Mid-Norfolk to join 142038…..
Any update to this post on the way?
A fair few class 142 been preserved i see miss seeing them on the Manchester Victoria to Blackpool trains + Manchester Victoria to Leeds line via Ashton-under-Lyne and they got replaced by ancient class 319/789 ex electric dmu’s that have been fitted with diesel engines so why replace class 142’S WITH MORE 1980S CAST OFF RELIC DINOSAURS from the southern region! The 142’s would have lasted another 5 years until northern got some better new rolling stock!!!
