GWR Announce Class 43 HST Farewell Railtour

Great Western Railway have announced a farewell charity railtour for their much loved Class 43 HST high speed trains.

This follows the recent news of their recent upcoming termination for their service on the Great Western Mainline. GWR class 43s are expected to continue working on local services in the west.

The GWR HSTs will bow out of service following their 40 years in service. The rail tour will take place on 1st June 2019 and it is hoped that celebrity livery power cars 43002 (Intercity 125 livery) and 43185 ( Intercity Swallow livery) will haul the train.

Booked Consist: 43002 + LA72 41160 40755 42016 42554 42005 42015 42361 44005 + 43198

Update: 43185 has gone to Ely and there is very little chance that it will be used on this farewell railtour. 43002 will be going to the NRM shortly after the 1st June, so should still be available for the tour, but all depends on what power cars are available closer to the time.

The farewell train will go from Bristol – Paddington – Oxford – Hereford – Abergavenny – Carmarthen – Paddington via Gloucester, then finishing with a non-stop trip to Plymouth.

This follows confirmation that the final GWR HST service out of Paddington will be on 18th May. You can read more here: Final GWR service 18th May.

Tickets for this special farewell tour of the HST on the Western are on sale today at Long Rock Open Day today. Long Rock Open Day is taking place today in Penzance at one of GWRs depots where advance ticket holders can look around the depot. A few visiting locomotives are also at the Long Rock Open Day today.

When we have further information about tickets going on sale online, we will share the details here.

HST class 43 trains continue to be widely used on East Midlands Trains services out of London St Pancras to the likes of Sheffield etc, and Virgin Trains East Coast services out of Kings Cross to places such as Sunderland. Don’t delay however, as the future of EMT class 43s and Virgin Trains have both been recently under debate!
