A1 Steam Locomotive LNER `Peppercorn` 60163 `Tornado` will stretch its legs around Yorkshire this Saturday 11th May, working A1 Steam Locomotive Trust’s “The Mad Hatter” railtour from Darlington, York and Wakefield to Chester.
The railtour leaves Darlington North Road at 0820, picking up at Darlington, Thirsk, York and Wakefield Kirkgate (1030). Running via Blackburn and Wigan, Tornado arrives into Chester at 1335.

Trespassing is unacceptable and carries a £1,000 fine or imprisonment. Please ensure you remain safe if travelling to see Tornado. This includes staying behind the yellow lines at platforms, and the correct side of lineside footcrossings and level crossings.
The train will be diesel hauled from York to Darlington on the return journey. The train leaves Chester at 1635, setting down passengers at all of the pickup points from outward. About 60163 Tornado
LNER Peppercorn locomotive number 60163 was constructed by A1 Steam Locomotive Trust between 1994 and 2008. Whilst many East Coast Mainline steam locomotives were preserved, all 49 A1 steam engines were scrapped. The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust constructed Tornado from scratch with a number of performance improvements based on Arthur Peppercorn’s designs. Tornado’s TOPS number is 98863, running as 60163. Since 1967, Tornado is the first steam locomotive in the UK to run at 100mph. Tornado was built in Darlington and is often based at Stewart’s Lane depot, London, where it often works DB operated Belmond British Pullman rail charters.
